Three detained for POS shooting spree, released
The three men who were detained for questioning following last Wednesday's shooting spree in Port of Spain, which claimed the lives of 41-year-old Kayode “Toes” Donawa, and 29-year-old Aaron “Max” Broomes, have been released.
The men were detained during police exercises in Laventille following the shooting, as police searched for the men who opened fire on a group of people in Port of Spain, as well as officers who attempted to intercept them.
They were released on Sunday morning.
However, police reserve the right to re-arrest the suspects should further evidence be made available.
The chaos begun at about 2pm on January 15, along Queen Street, Port of Spain, near Nelson Street Buildings 39-41.
Two men exited a white Nissan Tiida, and opened fire on a group of people standing just off the roadway.
The suspects returned to the vehicle and fled the scene.
In the aftermath, four people were injured – three being shot.
The shot parties were all rushed for medical treatment however, Donawa and Broomes succumbed to their wounds.
An 18-year-old woman from San Fernando was also shot in this incident.
She received injuries to her arms and legs. She was treated and has since been discharged.
A total of nine spent 7.62mm shell casings, and five live rounds of 9mm ammunition were found on the scene.
The suspects then attempted to escape but were intercepted in the vicinity of the CGA along the Eastern Main Road.
There was a further exchange of gunfire with police, and the suspects fled into the hills of Laventille.
In an exercise which was conducted that evening, the three men were detained, and questioned.
