Update: 14-year-old girl among three killed in Carenage shootout

Three people, including a teenaged girl, are dead, while at least three others have been left injured following a shootout between police and residents at Big Yard, Carenage on Friday night.

The deceased are Naomi Nelson, 14, Kareem “Baldwin” Roberts, 27, and Keron “Frosty” Eve, 30.

According to police reports, around 7.30 pm officers attached to the Western Division were conducting enquiries in the area when they had cause to stop and interact with a group of people standing out in the street.

As the officers attempted to arrest a suspect, one of the men reportedly pulled out a firearm and shot a police officer in the chest. The officer was, however, wearing a bulletproof vest.

The officers took cover and returned fire. There was said to be an exchange for an “extended time”.

In the aftermath, three fatalities were reported, and at least three others were injured, including the officer who was initially shot.

Police and members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force continue to maintain a heavy presence in the community.

Investigations are ongoing.
