UPDATED: Intermittent closures of North Coast Road due to landslips
Motorists are being advised to avoid the North Coast Road due to landslips along the roadway caused by overnight rains.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has advised that continued rainfall has resulted in persistent landslips in the area, and intermittent closures of the road.
The Ministry says it will ensure that the road is passable, but it is advising drivers to avoid the North Coast Road as much as is possible.
Teams have been deployed to assist in the clean-up of debris and rubble from the landslips, as a short term measure that will ensure that the road remains passable to motor vehicle traffic.
Only yesterday, the Ministry's technical teams cleared the roadway of a landslide which occurred near the Maracas lookout point.
Increasing water content and moisture on the hills on the way to Maracas Beach due to heavy rains continue to result in further landslips.
A technical team led by Acting Works and Transport Minister Kazim Hosein visited the area to assess the state of landslips, as well as the preventative measures that will be deployed during the dry season.
