Tropical Storm Laura maintains 75 km/h wind speed

The centre of Tropical Storm Laura is located around 175 miles (280 km) east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

In its 2pm AST update, the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Laura was moving west near 18 mph (30 km/h) and the system is expected to move west-north-westward and increase in speed over the next couple of days.

Laura is expected to move over or near the Northern Leeward Islands later today, according to the NHC forecast.

On the forecast track, the centre of Laura will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands later today. Puerto Rico and the northern sections of the Dominican Republic will be impacted by Laura over the weekend.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Saba, St Eustatius, St Maarten, St Barts, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the northern coasts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the south-eastern Bahamas and Turks & Caicos Islands.

Tropical Storm Laura has maximum sustained winds around 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles (240 km) from the centre.
