T&T nationals being prepared for release from Caracas jail

The five Trinidadian Muslims detained in Caracas, Venezuela since 2014 on suspicion of terrorism are being prepared for release from the Venezuelan prisons and deportation to Trinidad.

This, after a trial judge in Venezuela held that they had served their sentences having been incarcerated since March 2014.

A statement from the Office of the Attorney General states that the government of this country continues to receive information from the Government of Venezuela with respect to the pending deportation, and will at the appropriate time provide further details.

The statement further indicated that the five men were subjected to a judicial process in the Courts of Venezuela in accordance with due process. Legal proceedings were recently completed and the individuals were found guilty of certain criminal offences and sentenced.

Relatives of the five freed T&T nationals: Dominic Pitilal, Wade Charles, Leslie Daisley, Andre Battersby and Asim Luqman, are hopeful their loved ones would return to this country some time this week.
