Two caught trying to smuggle marijuana in watermelons into prison
Two men are now in police custody after their failed attempt to smuggle marijuana into the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca on Tuesday.
According to reports around midday, the two suspects approached the entrance of the prison with watermelons.
Prison Officers inspected the items and observed what appeared to be marijuana inside the fruit.
They were reportedly escorted to their vehicle and a search was conducted.
A plant-like substance resembling marijuana was once again found.
The men were handed over to Arouca Police.
Prison Officers Association President (POA) Ceron Richards, commenting on the find, praised officers for their keen observation.
“I just want to say hats off to the vigilance of the officers who would have intercepted that contraband coming into the prison and we hope that officers, on the whole, remain vigilant and try to weed out the system of narcotics and illegal items coming into the prison.”
