Two held for $500K jewellery store heist

Two men were scheduled to appear before an Arima Magistrate on Monday in connection with the robbery of a jewellery store in which approximately $500,000 in valuables were stolen.

The accused are said to be a 23-year-old man and a 32-year-old man, who both reside at the same home along the Cumuto Main Road, Cumuto.

PC Cabralis is the complainant (charging officer) in this matter.

According to police reports, at about 11:09 am on Friday, the victim, a 31-year-old woman from Caroni, was at her business place, “Gookool Designs”  at Broadway Street, Arima, when two men entered.

One of the men pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the woman and announced a hold-up.

The men then robbed the woman of a quantity of cash along with her mobile phone. The men then proceeded to take all of the items in the shop's jewellery cases.

The suspect then demanded a garbage bag in which he placed all of the items and both men escaped by running east along Broadway Street.

The police were notified and officers of the Arima Police Station responded.

The officers received reliable intelligence which led them to arrest the two men shortly after the incident took place.

More on this as it becomes available.
