Two held after shootout with police

Two men have been arrested and a gun and a quantity of ammunition seized after a shootout with police in Maturita on Sunday.

According to police officers of the Northern Division were on mobile patrol in Arima on Sunday when they responded to a report of men spotted with firearms at Kingdom Avenue, Maturita.

The officers went to the location, where they saw two suspects sitting under a mango tree.

On spotting the officers, one of the suspects pointed a gun at them and fired a shot.

The officers returned fire, forcing the man to throw the gun to the ground and run off.

He was caught a short distance away, while the second suspect was also arrested on the scene.

The two suspects; a 39-year-old from Kingdom Avenue, Maturita and a 24-year-old from Bypass Road, Arima, were arrested in connection with the incident.

Officers subsequently recovered one gold and black revolver loaded with three rounds of .38mm ammunition.

Investigations are continuing.
