UNC on Chairman's detention: Distraction after distraction
The detention of Chairman of the Mayaro/ Rio Claro Regional Corporation Glen Ram is in keeping with an ongoing narrative by the PNM, that they were going “lock somebody up.”
The United National Congress (UNC) in response to the Corporation Chairman’s detention said the Dr Keith Rowley-led administration has attempted distraction after distraction to deflect attention from their incompetence, adding that it would be no surprise if they use every tool at their disposal to continue these attempts.
The UNC said the matter of arrests has been the PNM’s consistent talking point in and out of Parliament, and in the recent weeks the beginning of that plan has been taking force.
“It would also be the height of naivety to ignore the fact that this is an election year,” it added.
But, the party made it clear it would not stand for any wrongdoing.
Ram was detained by officers of the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau (ACIB) on Wednesday for questioning.
A former Ministry of Sport employee was detained on Tuesday by ACIB officers in relation to the same matter.
Below is the full statement from the United National Congress (UNC) on the detention of the Chairman of the Mayaro/ Rio Claro Regional Corporation:
This matter is now before the police, and as such we await the outcome of the investigation. The details on the detention are still being made available, and we do not wish to speculate, however it must be noted that all citizens are deserving of due process, justice and fairplay.
It however, cannot be denied that this has been an ongoing narrative by the PNM, that they were going “lock somebody up.” This has been their consistent talking point in and out of Parliament, and in the recent weeks we have seen the beginning of this plan taking force. It would also be the height of naivety to ignore the fact that this is an election year.
But the people of Trinidad and Tobago have seen and felt what life is like under this Rowley Government - and they are fed up, they are frustrated, and they are angry.
Right now, people are crying out for real and effective leadership, which this Rowley-led Government is unable to provide.
In recent months the Rowley-led PNM has attempted distraction after distraction to deflect attention from their incompetence, and we would not be surprised if they use every tool at their disposal to continue these attempts.
We recall that before the 2002 elections they charged seven members of the UNC including Basdeo Panday, Finbar Ganga, Dr Tim Gopeesingh, and things were found in Sadiq Baksh’s water tank - so there is a history of this.
Having noted this, we must make it unequivocally clear that the United National Congress does not stand for any wrongdoing.
The UNC remains focused on holding the Government accountable to the people of T&T. We will continue to stand for what is right and just. We remain focused on developing and presenting plans and policies to improve people's lives, when we return to office.
We defend the people of Trinidad and Tobago, and will continue to defend them against this wicked government. Because we believe the people of this country deserve better - they deserve sound leadership and a team that can get the job done.
