The United National Congress (UNC) says its political leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has not been confirmed to have the novel coronavirus.

The party is seeking to quell concerns after social media was abuzz with speculation on Friday.

Yesterday, party member Tim Gopeesingh announced he had contracted the viral respiratory illness.

During the election season, Gopeesingh campaigned alongside Persad-Bissessar. Pictures reflecting this have only fuelled these rumours.

However, the UNC said she is healthy without disclosing if she has gotten tested at all.

"The Political Leader of the United National Congress is in good health and has not tested positive for COVID-19. These rumours are dangerous, they encourage panic and chaos and we hope that good sense will prevail on social media. We wish those who have tested positive a speedy recovery and we continue to pray for our nation."
