United National Congress (UNC) leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has extended congratulations to newly sworn-in President of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
Ali was sworn in on Sunday, five months after the country’s general election, which was fraught with allegations of voter tampering and saw a recount.
In a statement on Monday, the UNC leader extended best wishes to the incoming administration in achieving its manifesto plans and working to unite the people of Guyana, by enabling them to maximise their true potential and create a stronger county.
Persad-Bissessar said the strong showing in the polls by Ali’s Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), was a clear reflection of the confidence and faith that the people of Guyana have in the vision which the party put forward in its campaign.
The UNC leader expressed confidence that Ali’s expertise, vision and experience would propel Guyana from “strength to strength”.
She acknowledged the contributions of Former President Granger during his term as the country prepares to usher in new national leadership.
“As committed partners in Caribbean development, we offer our unwavering support to the people of Guyana and they're new government to ensure that we work hand in hand not only to mutually benefit both nations but our region as a whole,” she said.
Ali's coalition won a narrow majority 33 of the 65 seats in parliament. Outgoing president David Granger's A Partnership for National Unity coalition won 31 seats, while another coalition claimed the remaining seat.
