UNC on Marlene’s arrest: PM must make immediate statement
The United National Congress (UNC) says it notes with grave concern that a member of the Keith Rowley-led Cabinet and Member of Parliament for Port of Spain South Marlene McDonald has been arrested on allegations of corruption.
In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, the UNC said this matter is now before the police, and it awaits the outcome of the investigation.
It noted that every citizen is entitled to due process, justice and fair play.
However, it said the fact that a sitting minister is under active investigation over claims of misappropriation of public funds and is now being questioned by the police, is alarming.
The UNC is calling on the Prime Minister to make an immediate statement on the matter.
“The citizens of the nation who elected this government to serve them deserved to have the Prime Minister, at least, make an immediate statement on this serious matter. But once again Dr Keith Rowley’s poor leadership is highlighted given that he has on two separate occasions, removed Ms. Mc Donald, and re-instated her in his Cabinet. The UNC notes that up to this time, the Prime Minister has not made any statement on this very serious matter, he remains missing in action,” it said.
