UNC Senator resigns

Less than a month after being sworn in as an Opposition Senator, Ashvani Mahabir has resigned.

The United National Congress (UNC) on Tuesday advised that the Senator tendered his resignation on June 7, which Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar accepted.

Persad-Bissessar will inform the President to revoke Mahabir's appointment.

The party said he cited personal reasons for his resignation, which it said it respects.

"We thank him for his service and wish him the best in all his future endeavours," the party added.

Mahabir was sworn in May 14 as a replacement for Gerald Ramdeen who resigned in the wake of allegations of conspiracy against him.
