Unpaid rent: UNC councillors evicted from offices

The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government is addressing, as a matter of urgency, the eviction of two councillors from their offices over non-payment of rent to their landlords.

Allan Seepersad, representative for Carli Bay/ Calcutta No 3/Mc Bean in the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation, and Bhusham Rampersad, representative for Rio Claro South/Cat's Hill in the Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation face the predicament due to a lack of funding to regional corporations .

The matter was highlighted at a media conference at the Office of the Opposition Leader last Sunday.

Chairman of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation Henry Awong said when the issues were raised with Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein, he was told that they would have to raise the issue with the Finance Minister.

Responding to a question regarding the councillors’ evictions during Tuesday’s sitting of the Senate, Minister Hosein assured that the matter is receiving the urgent attention of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government.

“We are liaising with the Ministry of Finance Budgets Division and we intend to bring a swift resolution to the affected councilors.”

Last week Monday I met with all the Mayors and Chairmen and this was brought to my attention. Prior to that I had been liaising with all the Mayors and Chairmen to find out whatever problems they may have, this was brought to my attention and I liaised with the Minister of Finance and we are bringing it to a swift resolution,” Hosein said.
