Vandals set fire to Diego Martin temple

Western Division police are investigating a report of sacrilege and arson after three assailants set part of the Shree Ram Dhaam Hindu temple in Diego Martin on fire.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday morning between 3:00 am and 3.30 am.

It was captured on CCTV cameras set up throughout the compound which is located along St Lucien Road.

Three men entered the compound by jumping a wall, with what appeared to be bolt cutters and containers containing a liquid.

They attempted to break into the front door, however, even with the bolt cutters, they were unable to pry it open.

The men attempted another door, however, this attempt was also unsuccessful.

As a result, the suspects broke a window and threw a flammable substance inside.

They then set this substance on fire and fled the scene.

Residents of the area notified the fire services, and the blaze was quickly contained.

In total nine murtis, paintings, and other items of value were damaged.

An estimate has yet to be provided for the damages sustained.

More on this as it becomes available.
