Venezuelan held for attempting to bring in guns

A Venezuelan national was among two men who appeared before a San Fernando Magistrate on firearm and ammunition charges.

According to reports, 28-year-old Douglas Raphael Mendoza Gonzales and Jason St Clair, 33, both appeared before Magistrate Cheryl Ann Blake yesterday.

St Clair, the court was told has no fixed place of abode in Trinidad, and is believed to reside in Venezuela.

They were both arrested on Thursday last, on a boat in King's Wharf, San Fernando.

It was alleged that they both attempted to import into the country two firearms, namely a Smith and Wesson handheld gun, as well as a Colt-action handgun.

They also allegedly had in their possession five rounds of ammunition.

The charges were read against them, however, the matter had to be adjourned to secure the necessary information for the Magistrate to rule on applications for bail.

It was expected to be heard again on Tuesday.

The State is being represented by attorney Harricharan Cassie, while the two men were represented by attorneys Devon Wiilliams and Abigail Roach.

More on this as it becomes available.
