Video footage points to suspect in Chinese national's murder

Police believe that they know the identity of the man who shot and killed 24-year-old Chinese national Chen Zhi Zhong on Sunday.

As a result, a manhunt has been launched in the area for the individual.

Zhong was fatally shot at his business place, the Karvill Supermarket, along Manahambre Road, Princes Town.

His last moments, LoopTT was told, were captured by CCTV cameras set up throughout the store.

It was said that Zhong was standing behind the counter of his supermarket when the assailant walked into the store at about 12.12 pm on Sunday.

The man called out to Zhong, and then leaned in over towards him at the counter, and it appeared as though he told the 24-year-old something.

Then without warning, he pulled out a firearm and shot Zhong in the throat.

The assailant then shot the 24-year-old one more time in the face.

He then fled the scene in a waiting vehicle.

Zhong died while receiving treatment at the Princes Town District Hospital

Robbery, LoopTT was told, was ruled out as nothing was taken, nor did the assailant appear in a threatening manner before he pulled out his weapon.

As a result, it is believed that Zhong was deliberated targeted by the assailant.

However, police have no official motive for the killing.

An autopsy is expected to take place today at the Forensic Science Center in St James.

More on this as it becomes available.
