Villagers beat, detain bandit in Vistabella
A 27-year-old man was detained by residents of Vistabella after he attempted to rob a 74-year-old taxi-driver.
According to police reports, around 11 am on Wednesday, the victim was plying his vehicle for hire in the vicinity of Royal Castle in San Fernando, when the suspect, a labourer from Gowers Well Road, Fyzabad, boarded the vehicle.
The suspect asked to be taken to Marabella.
Upon reaching Hubert Range Street in Vistabella, the 27-year-old man allegedly pulled out a knife and announced a hold up.
He then proceeded to relieve the elderly man of his cellular phone and demanded the keys to the vehicle.
The elderly man raised an alarm and attempted to fight off the thief.
The 27-year-old exited the vehicle and attempted to run away.
However, he was intercepted by residents of the area.
In the process of his detention, the suspect suffered injuries about his body, inflicted by the residents.
The police were notified and the suspect was handed over to PC Lewis and PC Breedy of the Emergency Response Patrol.
The labourer’s injuries were significant enough, police said, that he had to be taken to the San Fernando General Hospital for treatment.
However, he was eventually discharged and taken to the Marabella Police Station where he was questioned and charged.
More on this as it becomes available.
