Hairdressing and barbering will be two of the courses available at the St. Dominic’s Children’s Home new Vocational Training Space.
This project became a reality through the establishment of a partnership between the Digicel Foundation under its Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities (EPIC) Programme, and the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain, to develop the training space for the children at the Home.
The Club submitted its application earlier this year, and was selected to receive funding under the EPIC Programme. The US$5,000 cheque presented to the Club, will cover the cost of purchasing and installing hairdressing and barbering equipment, in addition to salon furniture and the necessary consumables to enhance and make the area truly functional.
The two courses will allow the children to receive training and gain experience within a relatively short period of time. This venture facilitates the development of vocational and life skills aimed at assisting the children in becoming sustainable and independent adults when they are required to transition out of care.
Alana Shanklin of the St. Dominic’s Children’s Home was enthused at the opportunity to offer such training and skills development to the children. She also shared that she expects that the children themselves will be very excited to participate in the courses and be provided with the opportunity to learn new skills.
She underscored the critical need for projects such as these which can assist in better preparing the children in their care in transitioning into sustainable independent living.
Looking to the future, Shanklin has set her sights on including a cosmetology course with the emphasis on nail technician skills, to be added to the range of courses available to the youngsters at the Home.
With the infrastructural work on the Vocational Training Space completed, it is expected that the children will start the specialised training in the upcoming weeks.
