Watch: Growing food at home with Centrascape

Growing food at home in a small space can be a great help with the weekly food bill.

Director and Head Grower at Centrascape Garden Centre, Dr Balliram Beharry, says there are many crops that can adapt to small spaces, such as various herbs, tomatoes, peppers, pimentos and even lettuce and patchoi.

Some of his key tips for growing food at home involve re-thinking design solutions for plants, such as a hanging planter made of PVC, or using a variety of containers for herbs and other crops either on a balcony or small yard.

Some of the most important tips include ensuring plants get adequate light, watering accurately, without over- or underwatering, treating for pests and feeding the plants with adequate nutrition to keep them healthy and bearing lots of fruits and vegetables.

Some handy herbs to keep around the kitchen include chives, thyme, basil, mint, rosemary and more.
