Watch: Juice Man is Derby favourite
Santa Rosa Park in Arima will be abuzz with activity on the Republic Day holiday as the equine stars go head to head.
The nine-race card is sponsored by Carib Brewery who has been a long-standing and valued partner of the Arima Race Club.
The main attractions on the day would be the 2000 metres Carib Brewery Limited Trinidad Derby Stakes, open to horses West Indian Bred three-year-olds, signaling the last of the Triple Crown races of the year and the 1350 metres Carib Brand Diamond Stakes, open to West Indian Bred three-year-olds and over and Imported two-year-olds and over.
The Hospitality Suite of ANSA MCAL at the Queen’s Park Oval was the venue of the launch and draw for positions of the two feature races earlier this week.
Trainer John O'Brien has five entrants in the Derby (Making Headlines, Apocalypse, Marengo, Blue Navigator, and News Flash) and expressed a measure of satisfaction and confidence with their preparation leading up to Derby Day.
O'Brien's Main rival is trainer Glen Mendez who many feels have the favorite for the Derby, Juice Man, who has been in top form in recent months. Mendez also indicated that his athlete has had good preparation and everything was going to plan.
Regal Intension, trained by Harold Chadee is also a top contender.
The purse for the Derby is $165,000 and will see ten horses facing the starter. While the purse for the Carib Brand Diamond Stakes is $65,000, where nine horses will face the starter.
