Watch: Notre Dame spire collapses as onlookers sing

The fire toppled the 300-foot (91-metre) spire and launched baseball-sized embers into the air, sparking an outpouring of grief.

Across the river, a crowd gathered at night singing Ave Maria, as the fire raged on.

Experts are assessing the blackened shell of Paris' iconic cathedral to establish next steps to save what remains after the devastating fire destroyed much of the almost 900-year-old building.

The chief architect of the Cologne cathedral said Tuesday it could take decades to repair the damage caused to the Notre Dame cathedral.

Officials consider the fire an accident, possibly as a result of restoration work taking place at the global architectural treasure, but that news has done nothing to ease the national mourning.
