Watch: PM rings Nasdaq bell in historic event
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley made history on Friday after ringing the bell at the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (Nasdaq).
Video footage shared live by Nasdaq showed as Dr Rowley, accompanied by ministers and other officials, rang the bell.
The event took place on the last trading day for the week at the stock exchange’s Times Square headquarters following Dr Rowley’s attendance at the United Nations General Assembly.
Dr Rowley said the occasion was a momentous one and invited everyone to Trinidad and Tobago.
“We’re the nation with the largest pitch lake in the world and of course we are the cultural hub (of the Caribbean). Our economy is based on oil and gas but we also have the best chocolate in the world.”
Dr Rowley added that there are many Trinidadians living in the US and that Nasdaq is followed very closely by business interests here.
“We benefit from an economy that serves Trinidad and Tobago and the world and we look forward to a continued close relationship with the US,” he said.
H.E. Penelope Beckles, Permanent Representative of the Mission of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, also mentioned the Bahamas which is still recovering from Hurricane Dorian.
