Watch: Police find drugs on Ministry compound
Video footage showing a police raid at a compound owned by the Ministry of Works and Transport went viral on Friday.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) shared a video to social media showing footage of the raid at a compound belonging to the Ministry of Works and Transport in El Socorro.
Police said the exercise was carried out on Friday morning, during which workers and various vehicles on the premises were searched. During the search, a quantity of marijuana was found.
The Ministry of Works and Transport said in a statement Friday that it granted authorisation to the TTPS to carry out the search and thanked officers for the professional and diligent execution of their duties.
The Ministry said it notes the development 'with concern' and that the authorisation was granted in a wider effort to ensure that the offices in which its employees and citizens conduct government business remain 'free and clear of all illegal activities at all times'.
"The Ministry maintains that the possession of marijuana is an offence under the Dangerous Drugs Act and wishes to remind the public that police officers who have reasonable cause to suspect that marijuana is kept of concealed in any building, room, vehicle or any enclosure have the power to search (day or night) the area in question, with the appropriate authorisation," the Ministry said.
Police said investigations are continuing.
