Watch: Sando mayor, cops fall out over late night pan playing

San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello has defended his handling of a confrontation with police officers during a steelpan showcase by Caribbean Airlines Skiffle Steel Orchestra in the southern city on Carnival Tuesday night.

The mayor was caught on video squaring off with officers who were attempting to shut down the street parade.

Regrello told LoopTT he was standing his ground when he was told by a group of officers around 10 pm that celebrations were to be shut down due to reports of violence in the city.

The Mayor said he sought permission from San Fernando police for the display to go on uninterrupted, which was granted by Senior Superintendent Zamsheed Mohammed.

He said, however, he was met with aggression by the heavily armed officers, which he felt was unncessary, but is what prompted his reaction.

"If you come in hard, I will come in harder," the Mayor declared.

The situation was eventually resolved when Mohammed came and smoothed things over with the Mayor and the officers.

"There is a certain way to do things. I am passionnate about the artform and that is a blatant disrespect to steelpan," Regrello remarked.

He thanked Mohammed for his assistance in ensuring that the event went on as planned.
