Watch: Sharon Rowley celebrates with Barataria community
One year ago, the Barataria community was gifted with a fitness studio at their community centre located at Sixth Avenue. The community celebrated its anniversary on Wednesday 18 September with an aerobic workout.
Since opening their doors there has been a steady increase in participation from the elderly and young alike. June Rogers, the coordinator of the fitness studio, indicated to Loop News that hundreds of persons have utilised the facility.
For the anniversary celebration, a special guest was invited to the aerobic session: Sharon Rowley, wife of Prime Minister Keith Rowley was in attendance.
June Rogers said “We made a special effort to get Mrs Rowley to be a part of our programme and she willingly came here.” She continued, “She was so warmly received by our members that she didn’t want to leave, in fact, she promised she would be back with us as soon as she could make it.”
The fitness studio was made possible by the Digicel Foundation's Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities (EPIC) programme.
In the New Year, the fitness studio will be looking to increase its membership base and are urging persons in and around the community to see the benefits of continued exercise.
June Rogers is also asking persons in the community to give back. “We are asking coaches to come on board… support of our corporate persons in the community to give back,” she said.
