Watch: Sony launch Xperia XZ2 smartphones and Ear Duo earbuds

Sony's new flagship Xperia XZ2 smartphone might put some digital cameras to shame.

The follow-up to last year's XZ1 can record 4K HDR videos, an industry first, claims the company.

"Both models come with the world's first 4K HDR movie recording in the smartphone. It gives you the ability to capture life in breathtaking detail within very vivid colours and contrasts. As Don mentioned, we are cascading the professional quality to consumers to enable unique shooting experience. You can enjoy the video clips you captured on any compatible 4K HDR TV, smartphones, and of course, you can enjoy easy sharing on YouTube in native quality," says Hideyuki Furumi, EVP, Global Sales and Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications.

It is also launching a compact version of the device with a smaller screen and battery.

The tech giant also launched new earbuds called Xperia Ear Duo, which are pretty much the opposite of noise-cancelling headsets: they let you hear ambient sounds while you listen to your music at the same time.

"The new open ear headset Xperia Ear Duo. Right here. Thank you. Excuse me that I don't have the cleanest ear in the world. Anyway. The Xperia Ear Duo lets you enjoy your favourite music while you simultaneously hearing the sounding sound as well as the conversations. In addition, it intelligently recognises the time location and activities and offers the personal information throughout the day."

Sony also spoke about its cooperation with Qualcomm to bring 5G to the industry soon, but without revealing an exact date.

"And I just want to say we've been working with many of our partners to bring 5G to the industry and we started very early with Sony. And we actually see significant progress and we're very excited about partnering with Sony to bring 5G one year ahead of schedule to the industry," says Cristiano Amon, President at Qualcomm Inc.

Sony didn't give any indication of pricing, but the flagship device is expected to be cheaper than Apple's iPhone X and Samsung's new Galaxy S9.

Mobile World Congress (MWC) runs February 26 - March 1.

The annual event is drawing over 2,300 exhibitors to Barcelona, including industry heavyweights Samsung, Huawei, and Nokia.
