The United National Congress (UNC) is demanding recounts in five constituencies following tallies at the close of the August 10 polls.
The People’s National Movement (PNM) declared a 22-19 victory at 10.30 pm last night, even as numbers for some polling divisions were still trickling in.
The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) as per the UNC’s request is now facilitating recounts in the constituencies of La Horquetta/Talparo, San Fernando West, St Joseph, Tunapuna, Toco/Sangre Grande.
Only when the recounts are completed and all numbers in can the EBC declare the election result official.

At a media conference at the UNC’s South Regional Office at the M Rampersad Building, San Fernando, on Tuesday, UNC PRO Anita Haynes said the party is awaiting recounts in the five seats, which are expected to have begun this afternoon.
Haynes, who contested the Tabaquite seat said it was premature for the PNM leader to declare victory. She noted that polling numbers had not come in for all divisions even in the Tabaquite seat where she was ahead of PNM’s Michael Seales.
Haynes maintained that the UNC would not be conceding defeat until the result of all recounts are declared.
