The United States said it will be revoking the visas of individuals “responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Guyana.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the sanctions during a live press briefing on Wednesday.

“Immediate family members of such persons may also be subject to restrictions,” Pompeo warned.

“The Granger Government must respect the results of democratic elections and step aside.”

Pompeo had warned sanctions were coming at his July 1 briefing as he noted: “Guyana’s election is long past due for a peaceful transition.”

Figures from the National Recount of Votes showed the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) received the most votes.

However, the process has been stalled due to legal challenges and the Chief Elections Officer’s refusal to submit his election report.
