Four held for questioning as Western Union robbed of $500,000
Four men, including a security officer, are currently in police custody following a robbery at Western Union in Excellent Stores, Port of Spain, in which over $500,000 was stolen.
The four men were detained on Tuesday morning mere hours after the robbery was reported.
The incident was said to have taken place at about 1:00 am on Tuesday.
According to reports, officers of the Chaguanas CID were on patrol in the capital when they were flagged down by a security officer.
The man informed the lawmen that he had been abducted from a business place along Frederick Street, Port of Spain by armed assailants.
The officers took the victim to the capital city to the scene he said he had been abducted from and they observed that the business place had been broken into.
There appeared to be a hole in the roof, and a safe which was kept on the compound had been cut into.
The 38-year-old security officer was then detained and is said to be aiding police with their inquiries.
His home was searched, however, none of the stolen items were recovered.
The three other persons were also detained a few hours later.
Police said they are looking at all angles, including the possibility that the security officer may have been complicit with the robbers, and as a result the security officer was due to be formally interviewed on Thursday.
CCTV footage of the incident was also recovered by police.
The interests of the security officer is said to be represented by defence attorney Fareed Ali.
PC Meyers is said to be spearheading inquiries, under the supervision of Snr Sup Boxill.
