Public Relations Officer for the UNC, Anita Haynes
Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC), Kamla Persad Bissessar hasn’t been seen publicly since Monday’s General Election.
Her absence, particularly in the face of several recounts requested by the UNC has prompted many in the public domain, even some of the UNC’s supporters to question whether she’s thinking of stepping down as leader.
Speaking at a UNC press conference today, Public Relations Officer of the party, Anita Haynes, said that there’s no need for Persad Bissessar to be a public spectacle.
“Our party system is set up where we have, and I raised this at the last press conference, an appointment as Public Relations Officer. I think everybody here is well aware that it is my job to treat with the press,” she said.
With many in the membership throwing their support behind Persad-Bissessar and a few others withdrawing theirs, Haynes reiterated that the leader is functioning as normal.
“Our political leader is doing the job that she is required to do at this very moment, while it is my job to liaise with the press,” she added.
Persad Bissessar has made multiple statements regarding COVID-19 and the current political climate via her Facebook page.
Kamla Persad Bissessar remains the UNC’s leader unless she either steps down or is replaced as a result of an internal election.
