WPC in court over gold ring fraud
A Woman Police Constable has appeared before a Siparia Magistrate on allegations of obtaining money by false pretences.
The charges stem from the sale of a gold ring.
The accused, Gina Ali, has eight years of service in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service(TTPS).
Ali appeared before Magistrate Margaret Alert on Monday morning.
Cpl Ramlal was the complainant (charging officer) in this matter.
Attorney Chris Ramlal represented the interests of the accused.
Police Prosecutor Sgt Starr Jacob represented the interests of the State in the first appearance.
However, as Ali is a member of the TTPS, a State Prosecutor will have to be appointed to oversee the matter, to avoid any allegations of conflicts of interest.
It was alleged that on July 25, 2018, at Erin Road, Siparia, with intent to defraud, she obtained from Devanand Subnaik $700 by falsely pretending she paid for a gold ring with diamonds and was entitled to sell it.
Ali also faced charges of obtaining $300 from Subnaik under the same circumstances.
After submissions to the court, Ali was placed on bail at $50,000.
The matter was adjourned to May 13.
More on this as it becomes available.
