Young slams media: I was misquoted on ‘fishermen’ comment

National Security Minister Stuart Young says his comments about ‘fishermen’ are being intentionally taken out of context by the media.

Speaking in Senate on Wednesday, he questioned how a fisherman could raise US $20, 000 in cash over night to organise a pay a ransom.

In a statement on Sunday, the Minister stated that he never said that the men who were attacked by local criminals earlier this year and forced overboard and murdered were not ‘fishermen’.

“So for elements of the media to go to one of the mothers whose son was killed by these local criminals and mislead her, when she is understandably mourning, is denounced by the Minister.”

Minister Young said he has no issue whatsoever with the families of those who lost their loved ones earlier this year at the hands of local criminals and expressed his sympathy and condolences to the families of the seven men who tragically lost their lives at sea.
