Ravi B, Omardath Maharaj lead the pack into Chutney Soca final

His nine contenders were revealed on Monday following the semi-finals at LIV nightclub in San Fernando where 33 singers vied for a spot in the finals. 

Among them are former Chutney Soca Monarchs Rikki D Jaimaster, Ravi B and Rooplal Gidharrie.

Ravi B topped the semi-final round of the 2017 Pick 2 Chutney Soca Monarch with his mega cross-over hit ‘Budget’.

He was followed closely by the other 2017 runaway crossover hit – ‘Ramsingh Sharma’ by Omardath Maharaj, with just two points separating the two top artistes.

Chutney Soca singer protests use of Bollywood melodies in competition

Supersad, who has been a finalist in the Chutney Soca Monarch competition 15 times, told Loop the use of Bollywood melodies has to stop.

"They using Bollywood melodies in the competition and winning two million, I going to make some noise, every year I singing original songs and getting rob," he said.

Supersad, who has entered the competition this year, said he will hold the press conference outside of Southex in San Fernando, the company behind the competition. 

He said he is hoping for a meeting with George Singh, owner of Southex, on the issue.

Legendary Chutney singer Anand Yankarran dies

Loop understands that Yankarran died on Monday morning from a suspected heart attack.

He had been ailing for some time following a stroke in 2008 in New York where he had migrated.

Speaking to Loop about his passing, George Singh, founder of the Chutney Soca Monarch said Yankarran last performed in 2014 in the competition.

Former monarchs to square off in Chutney Soca finals

The three monarchs were listed among the finalists when the results from the sem-final round were revealed today.

Ravi B and Rikki Jai won the Chutney Soca Monarch title jointly last year but this year are competing individually.

Ten finalists will compete in the Chutney Soca Monarch competiition while 10 will compete in the traditional category.

Last year, Ravi B and Rikki Jai also won the Traditional category which was introduced for the first time.

Neither one of them will be competing in that category at the finals this year.

According to reports, around 12 am the singer and one of his drummers were talking outside their band room in San Juan when they noticed a Nissan B14 car circling the area.

The drummer said he and the Jai became very concerned and attempted to get into their vehicles.

However, an occupant of the Nissan car alighted and opened fire in the direction of Jai's vechicle.

The attacker robbed the Chutney Soca Monarch of an undisclosed amount of money and his cellphone.

Jai said he is grateful that he is alive and was not hurt during the ordeal.

Quality of 2016 Chutney Soca praised

Promoter of the event, George Singh, said the quality of the music is the best he’s heard in recent years.

“The quality is the best I have heard in a long time. Lyrics, music, production… there is a vast improvement from the last few years,” he said.

Singh attributed the improvement in the music to the work his organisation has been doing to lift standards.

Chutney Soca gets a Road March

Southex promotions, owners of the Chutney Soca Monarch competition, today announced that come next year, a Chutney Road March will be included in the list of Carnival titles up for grabs.

George Singh, CEO of Southex, told Loop today that there will be designated points assigned at all major Carnival spots throughout the country where DJs will be encouraged to play Chutney songs to determine which one will reign supreme.
