Barcelona sack director after Messi comments

Gratacos, the director of Institutional Relations and of training and education, and a key figure in the development of the heralded youth system, suggested on Friday that Messi would not be the same player without the likes of Andres Iniesta and Neymar.

"Barcelona are not here only because of Messi," he said at the draw for the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

"He's very important but it was the team who won [against Athletic Bilbao in the last 16]. Without Neymar, Luis Suarez, [Andres] Iniesta, [Gerard] Pique and the others, he wouldn't be such a good player."

He then returned to the starting XI for the 5-0 win over Granada at the weekend, but will be allowed to sit out Thursday's clash again.

Modric, meanwhile, has featured for the full 90 minutes in Madrid's first two games of 2017, but Zidane does not need the Croatia international at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Barca recovered from a slump of form in April – a run that began with defeat in the Clasico - to win their final five games of the season and triumph in La Liga by a point from Madrid.

Madrid insists that Cheryshev was not properly informed of the suspension but the latest ruling disputed this and said all necessary legal proceedings were observed.
