Former chess champion Della-Marie Walcott dies

Former chess champion, 19-year-old Della-Marie Walcott passed away on Sunday.

Walcott had been in a coma for approximately four and a half years due to complications that arose after a brain surgery in December 2015.

In a statement on Sunday, the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association (TTCA) extended condolences to Walcott's family.

"On behalf of the TTCA, we extend sincere condolences to Debra and Dominic (Della-Marie’s father) and her brother Alex, also a former chess player. May she rest in eternal peace and may God grant serenity and comfort to her family."

In paying tribute to the former chess champion, the Association noted that Walcott was a former National Youth Chess Champion, multiple medal winner at various regional chess tournaments and a two-time member of the Trinidad and Tobago women’s chess team at the World Chess Olympiad.

It also added that her mother was a former member of the TTCA Executive and still serves as an executive member of the Valkyries Chess Club.
