Former Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine says the Ministry of Energy should launch an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the rupture of Heritage Petroleum Company Limited’s Tank 27 and compromise of the tank’s bund wall during hydro testing operations.

In a statement, Ramnarine said it is clear that something was "fundamentally wrong" in the planning and execution of the hydro test.

"If we are to avoid the recurrence of such events, and to facilitate learning from circumstances that led to this incident, an investigation and failure analysis need to be undertaken immediately to ascertain the causative factors and root causes leading to the failure of this hydro test."

In a statement on Sunday, Heritage Petroleum said it was in the process of conducting an engineered hydro test to assess the integrity of Tank 27 at the Adventure Tank Farm in Pt Fortin when there was a failure of the tank wall causing a leak.

It said the leak caused the sea water, utilised in the hydro test, to flow out of the tank, overflowing the bunded area and into the roadway and the nearby Atlantic LNG compound.
