The Hyatt Regency Trinidad has announced that it has laid off an undisclosed number of staff members due to the fallout from the new coronavirus pandemic.

The hotel on Friday sent an internal memo explaining that the "unprecedented decline in travel demand" greatly affected its operations.

Trinidad and Tobago's borders have been closed since March when the COVID-19 virus was first recorded in the region.

"Unfortunately, as a result, we made the extremely difficult decision to implement temporary layoffs across our hotel workforce for a portion of our colleagues," the statement said.

The Hyatt said that this move is the latest cost-saving measure it had to implement in order to stay afloat.

Reiterating that the goal is for the layoffs to be temporary, the company said that it will continue to staff the hotel according to the occupancy levels expected.
