Man arrested following police-involved shooting
A 27-year-old man is in police custody, while three others are being sought, following a confrontation with police in Penal.
The incident happened at about 3am yesterday along the SS Erin Road, a stone's throw away from the police station.
At the time, police were responding to a report of an armed robbery at the home of a 51-year-old jeweller along Deborah Trace, Siparia.
Sgt Ali, PC Maharaj, and PC Mathura, when responding to the report, observed a silver Nissan Latio speeding away from the scene.
The officers became suspicious of the vehicle and its occupants and gave chase.
On reaching the junction of SS Erin Road and Penal Quinam Road, the Latio turned right onto SS Erin Road at a high rate of speed and skidded on the road due to wet road conditions.
The vehicle collided with a metal sign on the compound of a business.
The officers pulled up a short distance away from the car and announced themselves.
The four men were seen exiting the vehicle with what appeared to be weapons in their hands.
The officers came under fire and returned shots with their licensed weapons sending the suspects in different directions.
Cops then called for backup and were provided assistance by the South Western Division Task Force.
The officers observed a suspect who matched the description of one of the shooters and he was taken into custody for further questioning.
He is said to be from Moonlight Avenue, Demerara Road, Arima.
A team of officers led by ASP Ramdeen, Insp Putkoo, and Sgt Rampartap, also visited the scene.
