The Ministry of Planning and Development said in a statement issued Thursday that the virtual training workshop would begin on May 22, 2020, which is World Biodiversity Day.

The Ministry said the TTBIS is a product output of the “Improving Forest and Protected Area Management in Trinidad and Tobago” project, which is being implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through the Ministry of Planning and Development.

"Friday’s workshop is a critical training exercise that will facilitate the upload of updated data on local biodiversity."

The Ministry said this system will assist in policy making at the national level.

"The development of the TTBIS fills a critical need for the provision of a centralized repository of information on local biodiversity that can facilitate policy direction and decision making at a national level."

"As a signatory to the International Convention on Biological Diversity, access to current and regularly updated data assists in accurate reporting."

"The repository also provides the opportunity for better information sharing among agencies as well as users of this information including civil society groups, researchers and students."

The Ministry said the University of the West Indies Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management, which led the development of the TTBIS will facilitate the training workshop, which continues over the three-day period May 26 to May 28, 2020.

A virtual launch of the system will take place subsequently, in an online webinar.
