Close to 2,000 people have been left jobless owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Responding to a question in the Parliament on unemployment figures recorded from March 21 to present, Labour Minister Stephen McClashie said 98 notices of retrenchment were submitted to the Ministry during that period.
These notices were in respect of 1,891 persons who were identified to be retrenched, he said.
McClashie noted that employers must provide formal notice to Minister and the recognised majority union in writing, in the event of the redundancy of five or more workers to be retrenched, pursuant to Section 4 of the Retrenchment and Severance Benefit Act Chapter 88:13.
However, he said with the exception of retrenchment there is no statutory obligation on employers to report other forms of termination of employment to the Ministry.
