Three new hotels to open doors in T&T in 2021

The Radisson Blu in Port of Spain will be among three new hotels to open in T&T in 2021.

The Radisson Blu in Port of Spain will be among three new hotels to open in T&T in 2021.

Three new international hotel brands are set to open their doors early in 2021.

The Radisson Blu Hotel and The Brix Hotel by Marriott in Trinidad and Comfort Inn Suites in Tobago are all scheduled to open in 2021 with The Radisson Blu scheduled to welcome its first guests as early as March.

A release from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Art said these three properties represent the government’s strategic approach to ensuring that there is more quality room stock available with the addition of 300 rooms. It is part of the Ministry's strategy of providing attractive incentives under the Tourism Development Act (TDA).

Randall Mitchell, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts says: ‘These three hotels in total will add 312 high-quality rooms to the available room stock on both islands.  Although borders have been closed since March, the operators of these three major hotel brands are eager to open their doors as they have diligently studied the local market and developed marketing strategies for their properties that would redound to high occupancy levels and an overall positive image for destination Trinidad and Tobago.’

"During the construction phase these projects made a positive impact on the labour market and once completed will also provide gainful employment when hotel staff comes on board to bring the warmth of Trinidad and Tobago to their guests.’

The total investment by these international brands is a combined total of TT$600 million dollars.

In addition, all properties have given a strong commitment to becoming part of the domestic ecosystem that supports local agricultural produce by incorporating local ingredients into its food and beverage offerings. Local artwork will also be on display which will give support to home-grown artisans as these international brands will be a vehicle to showcase Trinidad and Tobago’s local fine art pieces.

Mitchell believes that the year 2021 will prove to be a year of resurgence for the tourism industry as international brands help to raise the profile of the destination by increasing its marketability.

This, coupled with new initiatives planned for the tourism sector by Tourism Trinidad Limited will help to return the sector to its previous growth trajectory started in January and February 2020.

The three hotels coming to Port of Spain are:

Radisson Blu, Ajax Street, Port of Spain

Radisson Blu is owned by the Danish Radisson hotel group and goes back to the 1960s.  This brand characterised by personalised attention through individualised guest experiences.  The hotel is considered to be the ideal mix between business and pleasure and caters to both the businessman in Port of Spain for that critical meeting and the family seeking a convenient getaway in the heart of Port of Spain.  This five-star hotel will join other Radisson Blue locations like Toronto Canada, Cape Town South and the Maldives.

The Radisson Blu Port of Spain will provide Trinidad with an additional 79 guestrooms in the form of one and two-bedroom suites and also two presidential styled suites.  The rooftop of the hotel boasts an infinity pool with a spectacular view of Port of Spain and the Gulf of Paria.  The Radisson Hotel group invested TT$182 million in the project and during construction and outfitting phases, employed approximately 500 persons.  This hotel was able to qualify for over TT$6 million in incentives under the Tourism Development Act (TDA).  When this hotel finally opens in March 2021, an estimated 100 nationals will be employed.

The Brix, Autograph Collection by Marriott, Coblentz Avenue, Port of Spain

The Brix Hotel has already firmly ensconced itself into Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and heritage.  The name ‘Brix’ pays homage to the once-prosperous sugar industry when the chemical version of sugar in solution was measured in degrees of ‘Brix’.  The shortened version ‘Bx’ is still used in wine, sugar, carbonated beverages and honey.  Fast forward to 2020, when the Brix Hotel, on opening in March 2021, will become the place where human chemistry and connections are made.

The Roof Top at The Brix will feature a restaurant and lounge serving hand-crafted tapas and cocktails infused with all locally grown ingredients ensuring that the brand continues to make inputs into the story and history of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Brix Hotel is a boutique hotel and will add 161 rooms to Trinidad and Tobago’s hotel room stock.  This TT$350 million hotel has thus far employed 100 nationals to facilitate its construction and qualified for TT$8.76 million in concessions.  The hotel will have a rooftop lounge with seating for 60 persons plus a restaurant and bar that will accommodate 90 patrons.  In keeping with the thrust of business tourism, meeting rooms will be available with seating for 220 persons.  The hotel is already listed on and is described as ‘unique blend of contemporary elegance and Caribbean charm’.

The Comfort Inn & Suites, Orange Hill Tobago

This hotel which is under the parent company, Choice Hotels International Inc., will be a welcome addition to the more than 7,000 franchised Comfort Inn properties located around the globe.  Once completed, visitors to its picturesque Scarborough Tobago location will have access to amenities such rooftop restaurant and swimming pool, meeting room, fitness room, gift shop and spa.

At a total of 74 guest rooms, Comfort Inn & Suites will be located at Orange Hill in Scarborough and is well suited to the island’s leisure market. The hotel is still in its construction phase and currently employs 200 nationals, however, when it opens will employ 75 people. The total investment value is TT$63 million and incentives have been approved to the value of TT$0.19 million.  This is one of two hotels scheduled to open its doors in March 2021.
