US Embassy temporarily extends eligibility for interview waivers

Persons whose non-immigrant visas for the United States of America have expired within the last 24 months can now qualify for an interview waiver for their visa renewal.

The United States Embassy announced the temporary expansion in a media release on Monday. The policy is in effect until December 31, 2020.

The embassy said change would allow consular officers to continue processing certain non-immigrant visa applications while limiting the number of applicants who must appear at the US Embassy for a visa interview, thereby reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission to other applicants and consular staff.

Previously, only those applicants whose non-immigrant visas had expired within the previous 12 months were eligible for an interview waiver.

Application information including a link to the DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application form is available on the Information and Appointment website at

The US Embassy Port of Spain said its consular services in general remain limited due to the pandemic.

The American Citizens Services Unit continues to provide emergency assistance, notarial services, and emergency passport services.

The embassy said that persons who are required to appear in person at the Consular Section should plan to arrive no more than ten minutes prior to their appointment and must wear a mask or they will be turned away.
