Watch: Senator says ‘We need more citizens and less idiots’

Independent Senator, Anthony Viera.

Independent Senator, Anthony Viera.

Independent Senator, Anthony Viera says what Trinidad and Tobago requires to successfully battle the COVID-19 pandemic is cultural change.

Viera spoke in a Senate sitting to debate the mandatory wearing of face masks.

While largely praising the legislation brough to amend the Public Health Regulations, Viera focused on the need for the citizenry to play a more active role in flattening the curve.

“These measures are calculated to cultivate behavioural change; to transform idiots into proper citizens,” he said.

Viera says the proposed amendments will do well to promote ‘progressive discipline’ among the population.

The proposed regulation institutes that a first penalty notice be issued, similar to a traffic ticket, if a person is found not wearing their mask in public.

A first offense could cost $1,000, a second will cost $2,000 and the third, $3,000.
