Woman charged after beating child with broom

A woman was arrested and charged on Wednesday by officers of the Child Protection Unit for one count of cruelty of a child.

The exercise was spearheaded by W/Supt (Ag) George and Asp Sookdeo, and supervised by W/Insp (Ag) Francis.

The Child Protection Unit received a report on July 11 that a minor was allegedly hit several times with a broom. The beating left the child with injuries to her shoulders, forearms, wrist and belly.

The child was removed from the home and placed in the care of her father while enquiries were conducted.

Investigations lead to the arrest of the suspect on Wednesday. She was charged for one count of cruelty of a child, and is scheduled to appear virtually at the Princes Town Magistrate today.
