Youth 'Vybzing' in CDB Outreach Programme

Three lucky winners will get the chance to see their innovations come to life when they pitch their innovations at the Youth Innovation Forum today.

The pitch will mark the end of the Caribbean Development Bank's (CDB) h ‘Vybzing’ Youth Outreach Programme.

The three-day programme, which began on June 1, is a platform for youth engagement with an emphasis on youth empowerment and participation in the development process.

The programme facilitates communication among youth and with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) on social and economic development issues, challenges and opportunities and implications for their lives. The Programme also supports strategic career guidance and life skills training and gathers insights from youth as regards CDB programming and policy for youth development and broader sustainable development.

The Programme will consist of four related activities that have been informed by recommendations from youth across CDB’s Borrowing Member Countries. These are:

  1. Youth Forum: A three-day residential forum targeting youth, ages 18-29.  The forum will engage the youth via interactive discussions, presentations, immersive experiences and group exercises on innovation.  An additional group of young persons (16-29 years) from Trinidad and Tobago will be invited to participate on the first day of the Forum.  Participants will also collaborate with CDB staff to contribute to the development of CDB’s first Youth Policy and Operational Strategy (YPOS).
  2. Youth Innovation Challenge:  On the final day of the Youth Forum, residential participants will engage in a Youth Innovation Challenge.  Participants will create and pitch innovative solutions to development challenges.
  3. Youth Innovation Expo: Young entrepreneurs and innovators from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as regional participants, will be offered an opportunity to showcase their innovative products and services during the Forum.
  4. Youth Innovation Vision Wall:  Over the course of the Programme, young men and women participating in the various activities will have an opportunity to document their ideas for, and commitments to, innovative responses for promoting sustainable development.  These will be showcased via an interactive digital screen – the Youth Innovation Vision Wall.  The Wall will be mounted on the last day of the Youth Forum and during CDB’s Annual Board of Governors’ Meeting on June 5-6, 2019.

The Youth Innovation Forum will see participants pitching their ideas designed to treat with some of the region's pressing socio-economic issues. The top three challenge winners will receive support to develop their ideas courtesy the bank including mentorship, prize money and partnership with the CDB.

The Vybzing Regional Youth Outreach Programme 2019 is sponsored by CDB, in partnership with the Ministry of Planning and Development, Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.  It is designed to give the youth of the twin-island Republic as well as youth from CDB’s other Borrowing Member Countries (BMCs), the opportunity to explore how innovation can be applied to meaningful development challenges and transform the cultural, economic and social context in the Caribbean.
